Complexity, accuracy, and fluency improvements through massively multiplayer online gaming: a longitudinal mixed-methods case study

Many English as a foreign language (EFL) learners worldwide spend hours playing commercial-off-the-shelf massively multiplayer online games. They engage in multitude of different interactions with the game environment and possibly other gamers, using predominant medium communication. This raises question whether such games improves these learners’/gamers’ speaking performance over time. Drawing on usage-based theories learning, this longitudinal mixed-methods case study addressed by measuring six EFL gamers’ terms complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF) course months, exploring their perceptions relating to gaming learning. The participants played two teams: Team 1 low-intermediate 2 high-intermediate proficiency. Each team comprised three gamers native speaker. Overall, results appeared positive for both teams but ways. Their showed improvements 50% CAF indices. These are discussed light about dynamics in-game communication, game’s socio-affective environment, development performance.
